What Is an EPD?

An EPD document is a standardized technical declaration that communicates product environmental impacts through a life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. EN 15804 structures construction-product indicators and reporting rules, while ISO 14025 defines Type III environmental declaration principles.

A third-party verified EPD does not provide a sustainability score or rating. Instead, it provides structured environmental data for informed decisions.

What Does the Nucleo EPD Cover?

Nucleo® consists of two external aluminium sheets bonded to a profiled aluminium core. The structure creates a lightweight and ultra-flat panel. The EPD defines the painted product weight as 4.482 kg/m² and the thickness as 4 mm.

The declaration identifies UV stability and colour retention within the intended use description. It reports “Deemed non-combustible” under AS 1530.1 and “Pass” under AS1530.3 and AS3837.

The EPD does not provide additional project-specific applications beyond the technical product description. Therefore, we do not extend the stated scope with unsupported performance or application claims.

Nucleo EPD LCA Scope and Methodology

ERKE structured the life cycle assessment around 1 m² of Nucleo Premium Bonded Aluminium Core Panel as the declared unit. The EPD uses a cradle-to-gate with modules C1-C4 and module D system boundary.

Declared modules are A1 raw material supply, A2 transport, A3 manufacturing, C1 deconstruction and demolition, C2 transport, C3 waste processing, C4 disposal, and D reuse, recovery and recycling potential beyond the system boundary.

The EPD does not declare A4, A5, or B1-B7. The producer does not provide a reference service life.

ERKE used a 2024 data collection period. We modelled the assessment in SimaPro 9.5.0.0 with Ecoinvent 3.9.1 as the background database. The electricity dataset represents Chinese medium-voltage consumption and states 0.916 kg CO2e/kWh.

The data quality assessment covers representativeness, completeness, consistency, reproducibility, data sources, and uncertainty. The EPD records these requirements as “Met.” ERKE coordinated independent external verification by Gaurav Das.

Environmental Performance Summary

For 1 m² of Nucleo Premium Bonded Aluminium Core Panel, selected indicators are:

  • GWP-total — A1-A3: 8.50E+01 kg CO2 eq.
  • GWP-total — Module D: -5.83E+01 kg CO2 eq.
  • Water Deprivation Potential (WDP) — A1-A3: 1.11E+01 m³ world eq. deprived
  • Abiotic Depletion Potential, fossil resources (ADP-fossil) — A1-A3: 8.25E+02 MJ, net calorific value
  • Total renewable primary energy use (PERT) — A1-A3: 9.45E+01 MJ, net calorific value
  • Net use of fresh water (FW) — A1-A3: 4.78E-01 m³

A1 raw materials are the dominant contributor, accounting for 95.4% of total life cycle GWP impacts and 95.1% of total GWP-fossil impacts.

We report the negative Module D value within its defined system-boundary context. We do not subtract Module D directly from A1-A3 to create a new product-level carbon result.

Material Composition and End-of-Life Scenario

The EPD identifies aluminium sheet, PVDF coating, polyester primer, adhesive film, and protective film among the product materials. Packaging includes a steel pallet, sulfate wrapper, timber sheet, and packaging plastic.

The declaration states that the product does not contain substances included on the Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern for Authorisation.

It reports SM = 0.00E+00 kg for A1-A3 and does not declare a recycled-content percentage. Biogenic carbon equals 0 kg C/kg in the product and 0.4576 kg C/kg in accompanying packaging.

For C2, the model assumes 50 km transport to the disposal site. In C4, 95% of waste aluminium sheet goes to a recycling centre and 5% goes to landfill.

Other waste, including coating, goes to landfill. C3 reports 3.91E+00 kg of materials for recycling (MFR). Module D uses the Circular Footprint Formula referenced in the EPD.

ERKE’s Role in the Nucleo EPD

ERKE defined the EPD scope and aligned the assessment with EN 15804, ISO 14025, and the applicable product category rules. We structured the declared unit, system boundary, scenarios, and production data.

Our team modelled the LCA, prepared the technical documentation, and coordinated independent verification. With the engineering expertise we have built since 1995, we communicate EPD results within methodological boundaries and avoid unsupported comparisons and greenwashing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Nucleo EPD a sustainability rating?

No. It reports structured environmental information based on LCA methodology. It does not assign a sustainability score or comparative rating.

Which standards does the Nucleo EPD follow?

It follows EN 15804:2012+A2:2019, ISO 14025, and the Product Category Wall and Ceiling Linings Sub-PCR WCL:2023.

Which life cycle modules are declared?

The EPD declares A1, A2, A3, C1, C2, C3, C4, and D. It does not declare A4, A5, or B1-B7.

Why is Module D reported separately?

Module D represents potential reuse, recovery, and recycling benefits or loads beyond the system boundary. The EPD therefore reports it separately from A1-A3.

Conclusion

For the HVG Facades Nucleo EPD, ERKE managed the process from LCA modelling and methodological structuring through EPD documentation and verification coordination. The declaration provides transparent product environmental data in accordance with EN 15804 and ISO 14025.
